Ralph Toledano, the president of Fédération Française de la Couture du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode (France’s long-winded answer to the CFDA), isn’t subscribing to the “see now, buy now” shift. “We have a common position on this issue,” he told WWD. “What is Paris? Paris is undisputably the fashion capital of creation. As far as we are concerned, the present system is still valid” — so expect clothing for fall on next week’s runways.

A better percentage

The Fashion Spot completed its biannual number-crunching and determined that at New York Fashion Week, “68.1 percent of the model castings were white and 31.9 percent were nonwhite. That’s a slight improvement from spring 2016 where models of color only accounted for 28.4 percent of castings,” up from 20.9 percent during the spring 2015 shows. But, to keep in mind during any self-congratulation: i-D reported that the Sudanese-Australian model Ajak Deng announced she’s “officially done with the fashion industry” and “can no longer deal with the fakes and the lies”; her manager Stephen Bucknall alluded to what might have informed Deng’s decision, saying, “They’ll book the big Caucasian girls, spend the big dollars, and fly them in from L.A., but I’ve yet to see them book a dark-skinned girl in that way.”
